Why did Israel and the United States Conduct Operation Roaring Lion?
Beginning on February 28th, 2026, the United States Military and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted Operation Roaring Lion against Iran, the Ayatollah, and their nuclear weapons sites. Following weeks of failed agreements between the United States and Iran, the two allied countries launched a strike on the country to eliminate Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
On February 28, 2026, Operation Roaring Lion was launched by the Israel Defense Forces and the United States Armed Forces to neutralize IRGC missile launch sites, air defenses, and senior commanders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Aside from Khamenei, 35 to 40 other top Iranian leaders were killed, in what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called an "existential threat.”
These leaders and officials included: Commander-in-chief of the IRGC, Mohammad Pakpour, Iran's Defense Minister, Amir Aziz Nasirzadeh, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Abdolrahim Mousavi, and Secretary of the National Defense Council, Ali Shamkhani.
The initial Operation Roaring Lion campaign involved the bombing of the Natanz Nuclear Facility, located 124 miles southeast of Tehran, which holds the commercial Fuel Enrichment Plant and the Pilot Fuel Enrichment Plant, along with the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant, an original IRGC base.
Following the destruction of these sites, 22,000 Iranian gas centrifuges were damaged, causing Iran’s ability to enrich uranium to be dismantled.
The primary target of Operation Roaring Lion was the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Although he was presumed to have been relocated to a safer site, satellite imagery proves he was killed in the airstrikes.
Khamenei has been in power as Iran's Supreme Leader since1989, after serving two terms as the nation's president from 1981 to 1989, marking an end to a 37-year reign of terror.
Iran’s people are profoundly affected by the operation, but it has created questions about who will take the reins following Khamenei's death.
