How Was the Ghost Army Used During World War II?
Activated on January 20, 1944, the United States Army’s Ghost Army was deployed in Europe during World War II in 20 tactical battlefield deceptions across Western Europe from June 1944 to July 1945, including Operation Fortitude from March to June 1944, the Battle of the Bulge from December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945, and the crossing of the Rhine River on March 7, 1945.
Officially known as the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, this secret unit was made up of 1,100 men, while its 3133rd Signal Company Special consisted of 200 men who operated independently in Italy.
