What Happened at the Battle of Blenheim?
Fought on August 13, 1704, on the Danube River in Bavaria, Germany, near the village of Blenheim, the Battle of Blenheim saw the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy’s Grand Alliance Army launch a surprise attack on the Franco-Bavarian Army led by Marshal Tallard, Marshal Marsin, and the Elector of Bavaria, capturing Tallard.
After the Battle of Blenheim, the Grand Alliance hailed victory; the Franco-Bavarian Army, consisting of 56,000 to 60,000 soldiers, was unable to capture Vienna, Austria, which led to Bavaria being knocked out of the War of the Spanish Succession.
Meanwhile, leaders of the Grand Alliance initiated flank attacks around the village, causing the Franco Army to shift its reserve soldiers inside the village, instead of fighting on the Franco-Bavarian line along the Danube River.
Because of the location of the village and the military strategy of Marshal Tallard, the Franco-Bavarian Army lost 34,000 to 40,000 men, including 6,000 killed or drowned, 7,000 wounded, and 14,000 taken prisoner.
On the other side, the Grand Alliance Army suffered 13,000 losses, including 4,500 killed, 8,000 wounded, and 500 captured.
Due to their loss, Vienna was saved from being destroyed, as King Louis XIV planned to seize the city and knock Emperor Leopold I out of the war.
Before the battle, the Duke of Marlborough led his men on a 250-mile journey to the Danube River from the Low Countries in about two months to block the way for the opposition.
Overall, the Battle of Blenheim during the War of the Spanish Succession helped to preserve the balance of power in Europe and demonstrated the effectiveness of coalition warfare against the French and its allies.
