What is the Pantheon?

The Pantheon is an ancient temple dedicated to the Roman Gods. It was completed in 126 CE during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, and since 609 AD, it has served as a Catholic Church under the name the Basilica of St. Mary and the Maryrs.

The Pantheon stands out for its massive domed roof, which was a groundbreaking feat of engineering at the time and remains a groundbreaking feat of engineering during the second century CE and to this day, remains the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome.

Meanwhile, the oculus provides the only natural light inside and creates a dramatic effect as sunlight moves across the interior.

Furthermore, the Pantheon represents the religious and cultural ambitions of imperial Rome, as it served as a symbol of the Roman Empire’s power and its embrace of diverse deities.

Up until 380 AD, it played a key role in the empire's history, but in the 7th century, it was converted into a Christian church, which helped ensure its preservation while many other ancient Roman buildings fell into ruin.

Today, it is an active church and a major tourist attraction in Rome, as well as a burial place for the artist Raphael.
