What was Saladin Most Famous For?

Commander Salah ad-Din Yusuf Ibn Ayyub, also known as Commander Saladin, was most famous for founding the Ayyubid dynasty in 1171 after abolishing the Shia Muslim Fatimid Caliphate in Egypt and for winning numerous battles during his campaign against the Crusaders from July 4, 1187, to October 2, 1187. His most significant battle, the Battle of Hattin, fought on July 4, 1187, marked a pivotal turning point in the Crusader Era, as it led to the recapture of Jerusalem and its surrounding territories in early October.

Leading up to the Battle of Hattin on July 4, 1187, Saladin united Egypt in 1169, Syria from 1174-1183, and Mosul from 1185-1186, while focusing on constructing a unified Muslim front capable of confronting the Crusaders.

Moreover, political tensions rose because of repeated violent initiatives, done by Crusader lords.

This gave Saladin the green light to launch a full-scale attack to retake the holy city of Jerusalem on September 20, 1187, and its neighboring cities, including Ascalon, Toron, Nazareth, and Caesarea.

On October 2, 1187, Saladin accepted the peaceful surrender from the Crusader defenders led by Balian of Ibelin after the Siege of Jerusalem.

Through the tactical brilliance of Commander Saladin, fighters cut the enemy Crusaders off from water, set fire to the dry grass, leaving them parched and drenched in the heat.

In the end, this gave rise to the Ayyubid army and a defeat of the Crusaders by way of dehydration and exhaustion.

Overall, the Battle of Hattin had its short- and long-term effects, including the weakening of the Crusader presence in the Levant, the rise of Saladin's Ayyubid dynasty, and Saladin capturing Crusader-held towns, ports, and fortifications across Palestine.

For example, Jerusalem was immediately reclaimed via a strong threshold of unity and morale across the Muslim states.

Although this battle is considered the “bloodiest battle of the Crusades”, Hattin freed the Holy City from Crusader rule, ending their nearly 100-year control.
