What was the Age of Exploration?

Also known as the Age of Discovery, the Age of Exploration spanned from the early 15th century to the 17th century. It marked a turning point in world history as European powers, particularly Portugal and Spain, launched extensive overseas voyages to find new territories and trade routes.

The main motivations behind those explorations were economic, including access to spices and gold, as well as expanding political influence, and spreading Christianity. During this period, famed explorers like Christopher Columbus reached the Americas in 1492, Vasco de Gama sailed around Africa to India, and Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition completed the first circumnavigation of the globe. Furthermore, this age led to the mapping of the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Overall, the period’s significance lies in the profound and lasting impact it had on global trade, cultural exchanges, and the shaping of the modern world.

Why it matters

The age of exploration marked the beginning of European colonialism, which altered societies and economies of the regions that were yet to be explored.
