What Was the War of 1812?

The War of 1812 was a pivotal military conflict between the United States and Great Britain from 1812 to 1815. The fighting began due to British restrictions on American trade and the impressment of American sailors into the British Navy, to name a few.

During the four year war, battles took place both on land and sea, with significant moments being the 1814 burning of Washington, D.C by British forces, the defense of Baltimore, and the writing of The Star-Spangled Banner.

In 1814, the Treaty of Ghent was signed to restore relations between the United States and Great Britain.

The War of 1812 is significant because it was the first time the United States declared war on another nation, along with high levels of American pride being fostered after the January 1815 Battle of New Orleans.

While both sides gained minimal territory, the war weakened the resistance of the Midwest and paved the way for westward expansion.

Meanwhile, the primary participants in the war were American and British forces, but Native American tribes and Canadian militias also contributed.

Overall, the war demonstrated the resilience of the young United States and contributed to the lasting peace between the United States and Great Britain.
