Who is the “Father of Reggae?”

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, on June 3, 1940, Joe Higgs became the Father of Reggae through his musical teachings in seminars and lessons from the 1950s and 1960s from his home in Trenchtown, Kingston, while also mentoring famed reggae musicians, Bob Marley, The Wailers, and Jimmy Cliff in the art of singing.

In 1958, Joe Higgs formed the musical duo Higgs and Wilson alongside Roy Wilson after he learned to sing from his mother, who sang in church choirs.

That being said, that same year, the duo released their first song, Oh Manny Oh (1958), which became one of the first local records pressed in Jamaica.

For six years, the musical duo only produced singles, rather than a full-length album.

Their key songs include: Mighty Man (1961), When You Tell Me Baby (1962), and Love Not For Me (1964). In 1964, Roy Wilson moved to the United States, while Joe Higgs remained in Jamaica to pursue a solo career in which he continued to make music and perform until his death at age 59 on December 18, 1999.

Launching a solo career that lasted four decades, Higgs released six albums from 1975 to 1995, including his debut, Life Of Contradiction (1975), Triumph! (1985), Family (1988), and his final album, Joe and Marcia Together: Roots Combination (1995), along with singles: Run Boy Run (1967), Neighbour Neighbour (1967), Talk to That Man (1983), and You Hurt My Soul (1968).

When he mentored The Wailers, it directly influenced their breakout hit Simmer Down, which was released in 1963.

Overall, Joe Higgs, also known as the Father of Reggae, is remembered for his musical influence, mentoring a new generation of reggae artists, and becoming a foundational member in the genre’s history.
