Who was Vincent Van Gogh?

Born in 1853, Vincent Van Gogh is regarded as one of the most influential painters in Western art. Throughout his life, he struggled with poverty and mental illness, but his career saw him produce over 2,000 works of art, including 860 oil paintings.

Some of his most famous paintings include “Starry Night,” “Sunflowers,” and “Bedroom in Arles” (1888). Within his paintings, he is known for using bold colors, expressive brushwork, and emotional intensity, which helped lay the groundwork for modern art movements like Expressionism. Despite his amazing talent, van Gogh was largely unrecognized throughout his lifetime, as many paintings of his were sold. Furthermore, despite his own personal struggles with mental health, including an incident in December, 1888, where he cut off part of his ear, have shaped his legacy and how the world remembered him. Today, Vincent Van Gogh’s works are celebrated for their beauty and his immersive style of painting.
