Why did a Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777 Get Shot Down?
On July 17, 2014, Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 (MH 17), a Boeing 777-200ER carrying 283 passengers and 15 crew members, took off from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands, bound for Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia.
While flying over Eastern Ukraine, the aircraft was shot down by a Buk surface-to-air missile system operated by Russian-backed forces because they mistook the aircraft for one belonging to the Ukrainian military.
The downing of MH17 came 131 days after the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 on March 8, 2014, disappearing en route from Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia, bound for Beijing Capital International Airport in China.
The flight was shot down during the war in Donbas, an armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine occurring since April 2014 between pro-Russian separatists and forces belonging to the Ukrainian government.
Upon the criminal investigation, the District Court of The Hague convicted three men- former Russian Intelligence officers Igor Girkin and Sergei Dubinsky, and Ukrainian separatist leader Leonid Kharchenko of life imprisonment, while Oleg Pulatov, a former Military Officer of the Russian Spetsnaz-GRU, was acquitted.
Overall, after investigating the cause of the shootdown, the Dutch Safety Board found that aviation authorities failed to close eastern Ukraine airspace due to military conflicts and prior aircraft shootdowns in the area.
Today, airlines now use rigorous, centralized, risk-assessment models to avoid conflict zones.
That being said, Ukraine’s airspace has been closed to civilian aircraft since the Ukraine-Russia War broke out in February 2022, while Iranian airspace has been shut down to civilian aircraft since the United States-Israel-Iran conflict broke out on February 28, 2026, after an airstrike killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
