What is the Largest Religious Complex in the World?

Built between 1113 CE and 1150 CE by King Suryavarman II of the Khmer Empire (802 AD to 1431 AD), Angkor Wat is located in Siem Reap Province in northwestern Cambodia.

Sitting on 402 acres of land, it is the largest religious complex in the world.

Originally built as a dedication to the Hindu God Vishnu, Angkor Wat eventually transformed into a center of Theravada Buddhism between the 13th and 14th centuries, as Buddha statues began to replace Hindu statues.

Furthermore, Angkor Wat’s complex has become renowned for its beautiful layout and design, as it combines a Khmer pyramid style with concentric galleried enclosures, five central lotus-bud towers which form a quincunx to represent Mount Meru, and a 200-meter-wide moat, symbolizing the cosmic oceans of Hindu cosmology, representing an unmanifest state of reality from which the universe is dreamed and dissolved.

In 1850, the image of Angkor Wat was placed onto Cambodia’s national flag by King Ang Duong, who ruled the country from 1841 to 1860.

142 years later, in 1992, the Buddhist temple was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, making it one of five World Heritage Sites in the country, along with the Temple of Preah Vihear, the Temple Zone of Sambor Prei Kuk, Koh Ker, and Cambodian Memorial Sites dedicated to the era of the Khmer Rouge (1975 to 1979).

Overall, the magnificent temple of Angkor Wat in the Siem Reap Province of Cambodia has had a profound impact on the spread of Buddhism in Southeast Asia, reinforcing its status as a major cultural landmark.
