What was the Battle of Beth Zur?

Fought in 164 BCE during the Maccabean Revolt, the Battle of Beth Zur was a crucial conflict between Judah Maccabee’s Jewish rebel forces, and the Seleucid Empire. The Seleucid King, Antiochus IV Epiphanes, had imposed harsh decrees against Jewish religious practices, which sparked a widespread uprising among the Jews of Judea.

Beth Zur was a strategic fortress built South of Jerusalem, and became the site of a decisive battle as General Lysias advanced to suppress the revolt and retake Jerusalem. Motivated to restore religious freedom and reclaim the Temple in Jerusalem, Judah and his followers confronted the much larger Seleucid army at Beth Zur. However, despite being outnumbered, the Jewish forces achieved a great victory, forcing Lysias to retreat, allowing the Maccabees to recapture Jerusalem and purify the Temple by celebrating Hanukkah. Overall, the significance of the Battle of Beth Zur lies in its role as a turning point in Jewish history. The Maccabee’s victory paved the way for rededication of the Second Temple and the establishment of an independent Hasmonean Kingdom.
