What was the Jamestown Settlement?

Founded in 1607 as the first permanent English settlement in North America, Jamestown was established by the Virginia Company of London as a commercial venture dedicated to finding gold and establishing profitable trade.

Jamestown’s first settlers were a group of 100 men and boys who arrived on the shores of the James River.

Naming the settlement after King James I of England, the early years marked trouble for the group.

They fought severe disease, famine, and conflict with the Powhatan tribes on the Virginia coast.

However, despite these challenges, the town survived, thanks to the leadership of Captain John Smith and the introduction of tobacco cultivation by John Rolfe in 1612.

That being said, tobacco quickly became the prime source of income for Jamestown, as the crop attracted profit and more settlers.

Furthermore, Jamestown is known as the birthplace of representative government in America in 1619: the first elected legislative assembly in the New World, the House of Burgesses.

1619 also marked the arrival of the first recorded Africans in English America, which would end up having lasting consequences for American history.

Overall, Jamestown brought about significant accomplishments in the building of America, including laying the foundations for English colonization, establishing economic sustainability through tobacco, and pioneering representative government.
